The Farewell Kiss – an Edgar Allan Poe Pastiche
In my college days, I had the good fortune to become part of a skit comedy team, called “Nobody Imparticular” (the second word was humorously misspelled on purpose). We did radio shows, commercials and live performances.
One of the pieces we did, was a skit I wrote one dark night in an institution for the mentally undeveloped. I was the night caretaker and occasional aid and janitor.
The work was entitled “The Farewell Kiss” and was an homage to and a pastiche of the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Written in first person as a monologue, it was very well received when performed. Even though the group broke up after a couple of years, I continued to perform the monologue on small stages here and there. Eventually the piece was put into a box and lay dormant until just a few years ago when Amazon created the Kindle eBook.
“Ah, ha,” I thought, “I should write a Kindle ebook.”
And I did, putting together a short children’s story entitled “Selfish Sat The Bear.” While that story did not become a best seller, I was undaunted and decided to publish my EA Poe monologue, “The Farewell Kiss.”
A few years have passed, I started this blog and decided it was time to remind the world of one of my funniest published works. So now you know…

You can purchase the book at Amazon for a very good price or read it free on kindle, if you have Amazon Prime.

To remind you of Poe’s work, here is a part of one of his poems that has, for so long, rattled in my brain and colored my perceptions…
“A Dream Within a Dream” by Edgar Allan Poe
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow —
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
You can read the rest of the poem, plus many other great poems in this book: “50 Great Poems to Read & Perform Out Loud.”
Everybody should read the works of Edgar Allan Poe — his poetry, detective stories and tales of horror.
Just to see what would pop up, I have set my usual eBay advertisement below to show items of art related to this Great American Author…
